I recently took on a part-time gig as the Design and Technology Specialist at Empire Brewing Company, a microbrewery and restaurant in Syracuse, NY. Empire is presently growing its business, which supplies craft beer made from locally sourced ingredients to bars and restaurants throughout New York State. Here are some examples of work that I’ve done for them in the last couple of months.

If you visit Jewish websites on a regular basis, there’s no way you’ve missed this campaign for Hebrew Union College: Jewish Institute of Religion, America’s preeminent Reform rabbinical college, which is presently running just about everywhere. What you may not have known is that I wrote and designed the campaign! This was a very big project and took a lot of energy, from a lot of players, both at HUC and with our colleagues at Kelsey Media. I’m very pleased with how it came out in the end. J Street, an advocacy organization that promotes a peaceable two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, approached me for help designing a website for their new initiative, The 2 Campaign. I did all the visual design, including the vector illustration, for this project, and built out a WordPress site for them to hold them over while another agency builds out the HTML5 animations I came up with. You can check it out here.
I spent several months of the last year working with Breakthrough Design Group, a web design firm located in Syracuse, NY, on a variety of web design projects for local area clients. Several of these projects have launched recently and I consider them to be among my finest work. (Note: The images below are the original design composites. The sites may reflect some changes implemented after I handed over my work.)
WCNY is the Syracuse area PBS member station. I was responsible for the complete UI/UX design. View site
South Side Innovation Center
SSIC is an incubator for predominantly minority-owned small businesses. It is operated by the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. I was responsible for the complete UI/UX design, as well as the organization’s new logo. View site
Jadak is a leading manufacturer and supplier of barcode scanners. I was responsible for the complete UI/UX design. View site
Our friends at Kelsey Media asked me to help Americans for Peace Now with a campaign to promote their daily newsletter, News Nosh. Here’s what I came up with! Be sure to turn off any ad blocking software.
Snopes.com is a staple of the Internet, turned to time-and-again by those looking to verify suspect information shared virally online. But until recently, the notable urban legends reference site had no social media presence to speak of. That is until Snopes contracted me to assist them in developing a digital strategy and social media presence. In addition to designing and launching Snope’s Facebook page and revamping its outdated and long-unused Twitter profile, I have been providing coaching to the site’s owner, David Mikkelson, who has been running the site independently with his wife Barbara since 1994, helping him to develop his brand’s voice over social media. Through these efforts we have doubled the site’s already significant daily traffic.
This weekend I attended Hack Upstate, a hackathon for Central New York-area developers who wanted to pitch projects and get others involved in building them out for a day. My pitch didn’t make the cut, so I joined a team that, together in one day, designed and built FreshQuest, an app which makes it easier to find fresh, locally grown produce at your local farmers market. I did the branding and complete UI design for the app, which won 2nd Place in the competition.
Fair Elections for New York is a coalition of public advocacy organizations and labor unions that want to reform campaign finance law in New York State and get big money out of politics. If you live in New York, you may have seen their television commercials, which have been airing throughout the day, including during The Daily Show. I designed their site, which I built with my colleagues at Breakthrough Design Group.
E.J. Wren is using Prostores, a proprietary ecommerce solution from Ebay that, frankly, has its shortcomings. In particular, Prostores suffers from a poorly implemented — and even more poorly documented — API. Unfortunately, the Syracuse area homebrewing and winemaking supplier is locked in until they have the means to migrate to a new ecommerce solution. Bearing that in mind, I was asked to make the online store look halfway presentable and to help them get a handle on social media and SEO. This is what I was able to do in about six hours.
Our latest collaboration with our partners at Kelsey Media was for The Gefilteria, a Brooklyn-based purveyor of Old World Jewish foods. The Gefilteria wanted to let Jewish consumers in New York City know that their products had been certified Kosher for Passover and were available in stores locally. Here’s the result.
